Teaching large multilevel classes
In China, most schools apply “large-class teaching”. Large-class teaching has its favorable factors. Large number of students can form competitive environment which motivates students to learn English well. However, as much stricter demand to English education, large-class education gradually emerges its disadvantages. Large number of students may lead those inactive students unintentionally become the “dead corner” of English learning. The basic idea of new curriculum standard is that education should face all the students while the traditional large-class teaching is no more suitable for this.

To try to solve all these problems, I have taken several teaching methods, which have received good results.


First, we should carry out cooperative learning.

I divide my students to several groups and I always hold some competition in the form of groups. During the process, students study more actively to get more for their own groups.  Group work can also be used after class when teachers couldn’t give help such as reciting new vocabulary and textbooks. In this way, I can get a good teaching result.


Second, we should develop colorful extra-curricular activities.

To give students an authentic language environment, we label English names of all kinds of things in the school such as classrooms/offices/dining rooms and so on. Teachers also require that students speak English when greeting/saying thanks/apologizing ect. Then, we hold English parties once or twice a term. During the parties, we sing/dance/tell stories and play all kinds of games. The combination of teaching in class and these colorful extra-curriculum activities maintains students’ everlasting interest in English.

Third, we should apply competition mechanism.

I intentionally provide students the chances to compete not only in learning but also in obeying disciplines which makes them study harder as well as maintains good class orders.

Overall, large-class teaching will last for a long time. As an English teacher, we should find our own way to better it and better our English education.
