101 American English Idioms: Understand and Speaking English like an American.

1. Smell a Rat = feel that something is wrong 觉得可疑的,怀疑其中有诈

可以用 I smell a rat 来表达自己感觉什么事情不正常、奇怪、不对头的意思,就象闻到死老鼠的味道一样。
另外一个跟rat有关的词汇:【look】likes a drowned rat 像落汤鸡,浑身湿透

范例对话:

A: How come the front door is open? Didn't you close it before we went shopping?

B: I'm sure I did. I can't understand it.

A: Frankly, I smell a rat.

B: Me, too. I'm convinced that something is definitely wrong here.

A: We'd better call the police.
2. Go to the dogs: become run-down. 潦倒,堕落
示范. Have you seen their house lately? It's really gone to the dogs.
     It's true that it has become run-down and in serious need of repair, but
I'm sure trhat it can be fixed up to look like new.
     I guess with a little carpentry work and some paint it could look pretty
decent.

3. Fishy = strange and suspicious

同 smell a rat 意思相近,也表示感觉奇怪和怀疑,就象闻到鱼的腥臭味一样。

范例短文:

When the security guard(保安)saw a light in the store after closing hours, it seemed to him that there was something fishy going on. He called the central office and explained to his superior(上级) that he thought something strange and suspicious(令人怀疑的) was occuring.

4. Take the Bull by the Horns = take decisive action in a difficult situation
to face difficulties without fear 不畏艰难 勇于面对困难 bull【bul】

在困难的条件下作出决定性的动作,或不计安危,勇敢面对,直接面对,就象擒牛从牛角入手的方法。

范例短文:

Julie has always felt that she was missing out on a lot of fun because of her clumsiness(笨拙) on the dance floor. She had been putting off taking lessions, but she finally took the bull by the horns and went to a professional dance studio for help. She was tired of feeling left out and acted decisively to correct the situation.

5.Horse of a Different Color= quite a  different matter
a completely different sth to be considered separately from the present point
完全是另外一码事 完全另外一回事
范例短文:
Eric likes to play jokes on his friends,but he makes sure that nobody is hurt by anyof his parnks.A prank that hurts someone is a horse
of a Different Color!BEING PLAYFUL IS ONE THING,but hurting someone by one's parnk is quite a  different matter.

6. Let the cat out of the bag=inform beforehand
(often unintentionally)to tell a secret (无意识)泄露机密 泄露秘密
范例短文:
Bob was  going to retire from teaching in June,and the foreign language department was planning on presenting him with some luggage at
his retirement dinner,He wasn't supposed to know about it,but someone let the cat out the bag ,At the dinner Bob acted surprised, eveb though someone had told him what he was getting before the official presenation.

7. For the Birds = uninteresting, meaningless, boring and silly

无聊、无趣,愚蠢的,只是为鸟儿们准备的。

范例短文:

They went to a poetry reading, but they got bored and restless. As far as they were concerned, it was for the birds! They left during an intermission(中间休息) because they found the reading totally uninteresting and meaningless.

8. Straight From the Horse's Mouth = from a reliable source
直接得自有关人士 sth told to one directly,from the person concerend.

说话者本人的原话,或从可靠、权威人士处得来的信息。美国人在这里把说话的人比作大马了。

范例对话:

A: How did you find out that Jill was engaged?

B: I got the information from a very reliable source.

A: You mean Jill told you so herself?

B: That's right. I got it straight from the horse's mouth!

9. Horse Around=play around 简明英汉词典horse around [美俚]胡闹 鬼混 玩弄 闹哄
起哄 胡闹,闹着玩儿、开玩笑
范例对话:
A: Did you hear about Dave's back injury?
B: No.How did he get hurt?
A: Well,after the coach left the gym he decided to stay and horse around on the parallel bars,He somehow lost his grip and fell on his back.
B: That's too bad,but he shouldn't have been aimlessly playing around on the equipment without proper supervision.
